Me and My Shadow

Last week I reviewed step 2 with my supervisee. In one more step, she'll be caught up to where I've stopped. From there on out, we'll be going through Web 2.0 together, exploring each section at the same time. It will probably take us a while, but we'll definitely both get back on track.

I'm actually looking forward to RSS feed, but I have enough to do that putting it on hold for a bit is a bit of a relief.

Well, I guess I just did widgets, as I now have my twitters in my side bar (I hope). At some point, I will probably figure out where I am on 2.0 and start up again for real. It's much more fun whining in my personal blog, though.

Nothing new to report

My "Exploration" has stalled a bit, but I'm feeling more of the community these days. I like having online friends! Feel free to leave random comments about absolutely anything. It makes me feel loved.

Very sad that I can't twitter, actually--definitely added to the community feel.

Back in the deep end

Skipped right past RSS and went on to Twitter cause another 2.0'er made me.

I'd really like to have a way to add everybody's pages to my sidebar without having to type them in. Not that I remember to check them that often.

Ho hum

Apparently, I'm about 2 lessons behind everyone else now. Must have been all that time that I wasted on Flickr. I still want to go back and try a few more things with blogging and photos.

I'm about to dive into RSS feed, but I'm holding back for some reason. I have a bunch of stuff on my Yahoo account that is very similar to RSS feed, but maybe not exactly the same? I've really enjoyed having previews for all of my email accounts, the weather, craigslist stuff, etc. show up all in one place. I think I'm balking at creating yet another account/thing to check in on. My brain feels on sludgy already.

Flickr 2

Flickr may possibly be more dangerous than YouTube. Once I discovered that there are groups that you can join and add pictures to, I realized that I could easily waste several hours a day just looking for one type of picture. My favorites folder is going to be huge.

Finally! I've figured out how to edit. Now if I only knew why the dashboard doesn't show on every page so that I can edit more easily.

Yay! YouTube at work.

Okay, I'm officially on track with the REAL exploration and not just my own made up one. Articles read and video watched. Step one complete.

I may end up jumping ahead to Wikis next, since I feel like creating one, but I also really want to line up what I've already done with the program. We'll see how the cookie crumbles. MMmmmm....cookies. I'm hungry.

Flickr

I finally opened a flickr account last week. It's a lot more complicated than I was expecting. I'm not sure if I like it better than picasaweb, but it seems to be less clunky. I'm going to have to play around with it quite a bit over the next few weeks, but it would be better to do at home. I'm getting a bit Web 2.0'd out, to tell the truth.

I haven't even scratched the surface with flickr, I think. I haven't looked at the mash-up thingies at all. On the up side, I added a MyFlickr section to my facebook, so that was kind of fun. Now all of those people that I friended on Flickr will know who I am. I was surprised both by how many more people I know of Flickr, and by the friending process. I guess you have to be approved or added as a friend by the other side before you can really see anything on their end.

In an unrelated note, I started posting note and links in Facebook. I haven't entirely figured out the difference.

TV on the web

I read a really interesting article on the shifted librarian today.

Not that I didn't already know you could watch TV online. I've been doing that for almost a year, since I gave up cable TV. What I didn't realize was that there were sites devoted to free shows and movies. Our library system has downloadable movies, but I'd never bothered to explore Comcast's fancast. I hope that I can still get into it, even though I don't buy their cable TV. I'm also very interested in checking out Hulu, which just started carrying the original Speed Racer. I may try Joost as well, though I have so much ready access to old movies already, that it doesn't hold a lot of appeal for me, unless there are R-rated ones available. It should be interesting to see how they'd manage that.

YouTube

Set up a YouTube account at home over the weekend. Now you can't get me off of it. So far, I've only added favorites and figured out how to set up a quick play list. It only works in Explorer, though, since I haven't upgraded Firefox. Explorer really works better, but I should at least try the upgrade.

I seriously doubt that I'll be loading any video, but I'll eventually put up a screen cap or a pic.

Off and running

Today I suddenly felt like planning out my exploration of Web 2.0. Yeah, I'm sorta surprised about that as well. So far, I've read up on the 23 things program, read the introduction, and listened to a podcast. I'm very glad that I read that article last week about bandwidth. The gist was that it wasn't enough to have great bandwidth on your end if the servers and bandwidth on the other end couldn't handle the traffic.

Anyway, I'm loosely following the program in the "weeks" order that they chose, but I'll probably jump around within each given month. Enough for now. My carpal tunnel syndrome is starting to hurt.
